So “happy end” and “happy ending” would seem to mean the same thing. Although both are technical correct, “happy ending” is the idiomatic phrase (the one used naturally by a native speaker) when referring to the happy conclusion of a novel, play, movie, and so on. Usually this means I prefer happy endings because that means the author has seen fit to not end the story before all the story's problems have been solved or at least addressed. I can swallow a downer ending if it doesn't seem like the characters (or author) just gave up.

It all started with my first book After. My stories are the type of books that I want to read. I love all types of stories, from the ones about badass half-angels who fight demons and save the world to a billionaire with a seductive secret. I love to travel through time and experience different lives .   The last line of the book, of this series, says it all. "After everything, we made it. Whatever the hell our souls are made of, they are the same." When I read the last line of the book, I began to cry right away. It was over, the After Series was over. Overall, I was so happy, SO HAPPY with the ending.
